Pain Rehabilitation Program
Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts for more than three months and continues after the normal healing process is complete. As well as its physical impact, chronic pain can cause a number of other problems affecting a person’s wellbeing. These can include reduced activity, fear of further damage, worry about the future and general feelings of unhappiness. Other problems may include loss of confidence, isolation, loss of purpose in life and relationship difficulties.
Pain rehabilitation is a treatment approach for people who are struggling to live with chronic pain. The sessions are primarily led by a clinical nurse specialist or a specialist physiotherapist and aim to work with you to achieve the best ways to cope with pain, and how to lead a more active life. If clinically deemed necessary or so wished by the patient, input from a Clinical Psychologist or medical doctors can be sought.
During the sessions, physical, psychological and practical strategies are taught, which have been found to be beneficial in helping people to manage their pain-related problems and reduce their impact on their lives. However, pain relief is not the primary goal. All this supports the programme’s central idea: - people with chronic pain can enjoy a good quality of life, in spite of having a chronic pain condition.
Content of sessions
The sessions will encourage you to explore the impact of chronic pain on your mood, thinking and behaviour. They will provide an opportunity to make sense of the difficulties you are experiencing and to learn practical techniques and coping strategies.
There will be sessions on how to exercise appropriately, which is seen as fundamental to physical and mental wellbeing. Yyou will be provided with the support you need to establish and gradually increase levels of activity and exercise, leading to an improved physical condition and a better quality of life.
We will look at helping you manage your day-to-day activities, and to return to activities that matter to you. There are sessions on setting personal goals and learning pacing and activity management skills, with a strong focus on making and maintaining positive changes. Advice is also provided on healthy living, sleep and medication.
Sessions will include 6 sessions of approximately 50 minutes with a Clinical Nurse Specialist in pain management and/or a Clinical Specialist physiotherapist.
